ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to correlate the material properties of TiZr alloy material (Roxolid) and the mechanical strength of the implant fixture (BLT) through the maximum compressive load test and the fatigue test. Implant samples were purchased with BLT (Roxolid, Straumann, Switzerland) and Octa1 (cold-worked, Megagen Implant, Korea) fixtures made of two materials (TiZr and cold-worked Ti Grade 4). After the maximum compressive load test, the test specimens were analyzed with a optical microscope to confirm the fracture pattern. After the fatigue test, the samples that passed 5 million cycles were analyzed for the precision fit using a scanning electron microscope. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test (α=0.05). In the compressive load test, the small diameter (3.3 mm) implants with the same length and the common diameter (4.1 mm) implants had fracture or bending regardless of the material in both the test and control groups. The fatigue load showed the same results without significance and the gap between the fixture and abutment interface was within 10 µm in both the test and control groups in the precision fit test. There was no statistically significant difference in the maximum compressive load and fatigue test for the comparison of mechanical strength between two systems (BLT vs. Octa1) with same diameter and length, similar shapes and connections.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Mini-implant system is applicable to areas of narrow space and area requiring temporary loading support. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of a mini-implant system as well as the application of mini-implant system in the dental clinical field. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients who had been operated from Jan 2007 to Dec 2007 in the four dental facility including Seoul National University Bundang Hospital were enrolled. To evaluate the factors associated with the clinical outcome, the patients were classified according to gender, age, area of surgery, type of implant, diameter and length of the implant, and the purpose of the mini-implant system application. RESULTS: From 147 implants, only three implants failed, one of them was for temporary loading. There were no serious surgical or prosthetic complications in this study. CONCLUSION: An analysis of the preliminary data revealed a satisfactory clinical outcome. However, more long-term evaluation of narrow ridge type as well as the patient's satisfaction on the use of a provisional type mini-implant system is needed.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Unlike screw-retention type, fixture-abutment retention in Locking taper connection depends on frictional force so it has possibility of abutment to sink. PURPOSE: In this study, Bicon(R) Implant System, one of the conical internal connection implant system, was used with applying loading force to the abutments connected to the fixture. Then the amount of sinking was measured. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 10 Bicon(R) implant fixtures were used. First, the abutment was connected to the fixture with finger force. Then it was tapped with a mallet for 3 times and loads of 20 kg corresponding to masticatory force using loading application instrument were applied successively. The abutment state, slightly connected to the fixture without pressure was considered as a reference length, and every new abutment length was measured after each load's step was added. The amount of abutment sinking (mm) was gained by subtracting the length of abutment-fixture under each loading condition from reference length. RESULTS: It was evident, that the amount of abutment sinking in Bicon(R) Implant System increased as loads were added. When loads of 20 kg were applied more than 5 - 7 times, sinking stopped at 0.45 +/- 0.09 mm. CONCLUSION: Even though locking taper connection type implant shows good adaption to occlusal force, it has potential for abutment sinking as loads are given. When locking taper connection type implant is used, satisfactory loads are recommended for precise abutment location.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Given the predictability of dental implant procedure from the studies of successful osseointegration, implant dentistry is often the treatment of choice to replace missing teeth in edentulous patient instead of the fixed prosthesis or removable denture. The Renova(R) dental implant has a RBM(Resorbable Blast Media) surface, internal hex prosthetic connection and a tapered design. At this study gives the analysis of the implant and the short term survival rate of the implant. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, a multilateral analysis was performed on the subjects undergoing placement with Renova(R) implant between August 2006 and February 2008 in Yonsei University dental hospital. 96 implants were placed in 56 patients and they were surveyed for cumulative survival rate. Among them 78 implants in 44 patients were surveyed for the rest analyses. RESULT: 1. The cumulative survival rate was 96.88% of 96 implants in 56 patients. 2. The mean marginal bone loss was 0.803mm and the marginal bone loss in augmentation group has higher value than the marginal bone loss in non augmentation group. 3. The health scale for the implants were 87% in success group, 9% in satisfactory survival group, 1% in compromised survival group, and 3% in failure group. 4. Two implants placed in poor bone posterior area by 2-stage failed during prosthetic procedure. CONCLUSION: Renova(R) dental implant showed high cumulative survival rate in installation on partial edentulous ridge and could be a predictable implant system.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Accurate fit between the implant components is important because the misfit of the implant components results in frequent screw loosening, irreversible screw fracture, plaque accumulation, poor soft tissue reaction, and destruction of osseointegration. PURPOSE: This study is to evaluate the machining accuracy and consistency of the implant fixture/abutment/screw interfaces of the internal connection system by using a Stereoscopic Zoom microscope and FE-SEM(field emission scanning electron microscope) MATERIALS AND METHODS: The implant systems selected in this study were internal connection type implants from AVANA(Osstem(R)), Bioplant(Cowell-Medi(R)), Dio(DIO(R)), Neoplant(Neobiotech (R)), Implantium(Dentium(R))systems. Each group was acquired 2 fixtures at random. Two piece type abutment and one piece type abutment for use with each implant system were acquired. Screw were respectively used to hold a two piece type abutment to a implant fixture. The implant fixtures were perpendiculary mounted in acrylic resin block. Each two piece abutment was secured to the implant fixture by screw and one piece abutment also secured to the implant fixture. Abutment/fixture assembly were mounted in liquid unsaturated polyester. All samples were cross-sectioned with grinder-polisher unit. Finally all specimens were analysed the fit between implant fixture/abutment/screw interfaces Results and CONCLUSIONS: 1. Implant fixture/abutment/screw connection interfaces of internal connection systems made in Korea were in good condition. 2. The results of the above study showed that materials and mechanical properties and quality of milling differed depending on their manufacturing companies.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the success rate of Korean implant systems. A total of 245 implants were placed in 112 patients using different implant systems from February 1988 until June 2002. Data on implant systems, implant positions, surface treatments, guided bone regeneration procedure, marginal bone levels, and states of surrounding gingiva were collected. A follow-up evaluations were done after 1 year and 2 year of loading. Clinical parameters such as probing depth was evaluated at the last follow-up. The marginal bone loss after 1 year of loading was measured on periapical radiographs. Clinical comparisons were performed to evaluate implants loss in relation to the implant systems, implant positions, surface treatments, and guided bone regeneration procedure. There was no clinical difference of success rate in implant systems, implant positions, and surface treatments. Mean marginal bone resorption from the time of loading to 1 year follow-up was 0.31mm in Korean implant systems and 0.41mm in other implant systems. The cumulative survival rate of Korean implant systems and other implant systems at the 2-year of loading was 95.6% and 97.3% respectively. From these results, it was concluded that Korean implant systems could be successfully used in clinical dentistry.
